Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of karate do you teach?

Our school’s main style is based on the foundation of Ed Parker’s Kenpo Karate and Sensei Richard Ray. Other Styles and influences include Aikido, Ju-Jitsu, Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Boxing, Kickboxing, and Escrima stick fighting.

What is a typical class like?

All students will learn designated techniques for each belt, a kata or form, special techniques including kicks, punches, and joint locks, as well as a variety of drills to enhance movement, speed, endurance, and timing.

Classes are physically demanding and will require physical exercise, stretching, and physical contact as the various techniques are learned.

What ages do you train?

Students from the age of 6 to 12 will attend kid’s classes starting at White Belt and eventually being able to earn their Junior Black Belt. Each semester of approximately 3 months will conclude with a belt test.

Adults (13 and up) will attend the adult class beginning at white and eventually being able to test for their First-Degree Black Belt. The average time to accomplish this is generally 3 to 4 years. Tests are conducted in class and will have a certain number of classes necessary in order to qualify to test with instructor approval.

Is there actual fighting?

Our school does do full contact sparring with protective gear. Each student will be expected to begin sparring at the Orange Belt level. Sparring is the closest way to simulate a “realistic fight” and is necessary to develop each student’s ability to overcome being hit, experiencing pain, and inability to act due to shock while being in a controlled safe environment.

Are parents allowed to stay and watch?

Parents will have a room next door to the training room where they can wait and chairs will be set up to watch inside the training area.

What else do you offer?

Special Seminars may be offered on the weekends for a variety of specialty courses such as Ju-Jitsu, Sparring, Weapon Defense, and Knife Defense by guest instructors or staff at the school separate from the general classes.

What is the typical time frame to achieve a black belt?

A dedicated student can earn a junior or adult black belt in 3 to 4 years typically.  Each student is different, and these are just a general standard. A black belt should not be easily earned for it would devalue the significance of achieving this unique status.
